Interestingly, mobile technology usage is growing rapidly among farmers and farm communities.
With the growing use of mobile apps and devices for data collection and communication, rural farmers are able to gather information from the field and connect in real-time with buyers and relevant markets that otherwise would not have been accessible had it not been for new data collection methods and devices.
Farmers not only are able to communicate with others, but now land owners can monitor their crops and keep a better tab on their produce and farm animals. They now have a central data collection point where they can access all the information that they collected while out in the field.
“Mobile technology, such as smartphones, offer farmers expanded capabilities beyond just email and voicemail and increased opportunities to multi-task on the go. Depending on location, most farmers have mobile technology access,” according to Smart Apps for Agriculture at Farm Management Canada (FMC).
FMC also reports in another recent article, from a study by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), that social media and mobile technology is quickly becoming part of the everyday fabric on the farm, and that highly effective applications are soon to be in high demand.
