In an October 8, 2013 article published by Bloomberg reporters Julie Bykowicz and Amanda J. Crawford, the government shutdown is estimated to have cost $1.8 billion, with an extra cost of $160 million for each additional day the shutdown continues. Some federal agencies chose to shut down entirely or remain partially open for essential work, while others remained open especially if they were not reliant on government funding.

By extension, the shutdown impacted other organizations that do direct business with the federal government. As a method of cutting expenses, government contractors placed up to 800,000 employees on extended furloughs and implemented freezes on the hiring of new employees. [Read more…]
